Palia bug catching guide: All insects, how to craft Terrariums & more

How to catch bugs in Palia

To catch bugs in Palia, you will need to get close to them and throw bombs to stun them.

As soon as you launch into Palia, you'll be given numerous skill-based tasks to introduce you to the core mechanics of the game and the key NPCs who will provide equipment upgrades.

Bug Catching 101 is a quest in which Auni will teach you about catching bugs whilst providing you with your first belt and Bug Bombs. Once you level your bug catching skill to two, you'll be able to access Auni's store and various belt and bomb upgrades.

To catch a bug in Palia, follow these steps:

• Equip a Bug Bomb by pressing the R key
• Approach a bug slowly
• Left-click, aim and release to shoot a bomb, aiming it towards the bug you want to catch
• If successful, the bug will get a dazed star animation above it
• If unsuccessful the bug will pause and then attempt to flee, you can try again with another bomb but once the bug gets away it will disappear
• Once dazed the bug will remain still, walk up to it and press F to place it into your inventory
• As per the Palia 0.166 patch, Bug Bombs will release an AOE, meaning you can target more than one bug at a time

After fulfilling the quest, you'll receive the recipe for making your own Bug Bombs. To make them, you'll need to make sure you have a steady supply of Clay and Sundrop Lilies which can be foraged from around the coast of Bahari Bay and Kilima Valley.

All bugs in Palia: Where to catch & time of day

Bugs are harder to catch depending on the rarity and the type of belt you are wearing. Better belts will improve your chance of catching bugs and can be purchased from Auni's Bug Catching Guild Store once you level up your skill.

Rare and epic bugs also have a chance to drop Silk Thread when caught, a valuable crafting material in Palia. Bugs will also increase in selling price if they are star-quality or a 'shiny'.

These are indicated by a golden sparkle when you catch them, and they will also make a charm noise when you are close. It's optimal to chase shinies at night, when you can see the sparkle more clearly.

Best bugs to sell in Palia

Although the best bugs to sell for gold are the epic rarity bugs, with a typical selling price of 360, they are incredibly hard to catch with the Makeshift Belt you receive from Auni.

Instead, if you're still within the early game stages, you can aim for the uncommon bugs, these have a 40% catch rate, which can be improved to 50% if you invest in a Standard Belt at level three of the bug catching skill.

Great candidates for this are the Garden Leafhopper, Mantis and Millipede all are valued between 30-40 gold each and are available all day in the Kilima Valley, meaning you won't have to travel or wait around.

The Garden Leafhopper in particular can get you a good supply of coins with a value of 49 coins each or 63 gold when catching one of star-quality. They can usually be found near bushes around the Mirror Pond Ruins, Mirror Fields, and Family Farm.

Alternatively, if you're fresh into the game, Common Blue Butterflies can be found all over Kilima Village and are nearly always caught by one Bug Bomb. After a few catches, you can easily earn a few hundred coins to set yourself up for some crop seeds.

How to upgrade your bug catching belt in Palia

Bug belts are essentially where you store your bugs and smoke bombs, used to daze and capture bugs.

When starting the game, if you speak to Auni and complete the Bug Catching 101 quest, he will give you a Makeshift Belt and 20 Smoke Bombs to get you started.

As you level up your bug catching skill, you can unlock crafting recipes for better belts at Auni's bug catching store, as well as improved Bug Bombs with various effects.

How to craft Terrariums in Palia

With terrariums, it's possible to place bugs as decoration in your Palian homes instead of selling cute critters. Terrariums aren't crafting items, instead, they are automatically included with a bug that is placed on your home lot.

You can only place star-quality or 'shiny' bugs however; normal-quality bugs are not eligible for terrariums (these are indicated by a golden sparkle and charm noise when you are close).

To place a terrarium on your lot, follow these steps:

• Put your star-quality bug into your inventory
• Select the bug from the hotkey options (check the bar in the bottom-right corner, scroll until you see your bug and select the corresponding number above it)
• Once you have highlighted the bug you wish to place, left-click, move the mouse to move the bug where you want it to be placed, then left-click again to put it down
• The terrarium will be added to your lot

If you have a terrarium on the outside of your house, and you wish to move it either back into your inventory or inside your house, you can do so by following these steps:

• Press CTRL to change to the grid view
• Then, walk up to a terrarium and press the G key to pick it up
• Press CTRL again to resume the normal view

You can also buy the Bug Catcher's Insectarium from Auni. This allows you to house multiple insects inside the same terrarium and is available once you reach Bug Catching level 20.
