Female Fast & Furious spin-off on the way

Universal Pictures is keeping it in the family, as Vin Diesel explains the grand plans for the Fast & Furious franchise when it wraps its current arc - if that ever happens. Similar to the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off, a female Fast & Furious spin-off will soon be racing into our lives.

Once upon a time, we were told the Fast & Furious movies were ending with 2023's Fast X, but that soon changed to a two-parter, and now, a possible trilogy that'll end with Fast 12. Having already gone to space in Fast 9, we're not sure where else you can go. But according to Diesel, there's still plenty in the tank.

Even when the credits roll on the "final" Fast & Furious movie, we were never buying the Fastverse was going to be ending here. Diesel confirmed it to Variety and explained, "I started developing the female spinoff… in 2017 with other spinoffs, and the sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the spinoffs."

This confirms the long-held rumours that at least one of the franchise's many wonderful women will take the spotlight away from Diesel's Dominic Toretto and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Luke Hobbs. Despite one ideal candidate being Michelle Rodriguez's Letty Ortiz, she doesn't sound keen.

Asked whether she'd return for spin-offs, Rodriguez told the outlet, "You pass the baton on. You take the back seat." She continued, "You go passenger side. When it comes to the next generation, you have to. It's the only way to let them define the future." Don't worry, there are plenty of others we'd like to see. 

Charlize Theron tipped for Fast & Furious spin-off

Back in 2021, there were revving rumours that Charlize Theron would lead her own Fast & Furious movie as the villainous Cipher. She recently started the wheels turning when she told Entertainment Tonight, "If Dame Helen Mirren does it, I'm in." We say, make it happen.

We're reminded of when the Expendables series was supposed to branch out into a female-first spin-off that was tentatively titled Expendabelles. Fans threw around action heroes like Alien's Sigourney Weaver, Terminator's Linda Hamilton, and even Rodriguez, but it never came to pass.

We also saw the Ocean's movies do the same with Oceans 8 - although it failed to hit the same success as the main franchise. Even though it's easy to imagine a female-led Fast & Furious movie with Cipher, Queenie (Mirren), Mia Toretto (Jordan Brewster), Tess (Brie Larson) and the rest, we'll have to wait and see who's on board.

The Fast & Furious movies have been a staple of our screens since 2001, but with the 11th mainline movie due out in 2025, it could be a whole before we see this mythical female-first spin-off. What's the bet that Diesel calls it something like Female & Furious?
