The video game movie is kicking into gear. Now that The Super Mario Bros. Movie has crossed that all-important billion-dollar mark at the box office, a brand-new bar has been set for the successes of video game adaptations on the big screen.

Though the likes of Uncharted and Mortal Kombat performed well, we've never seen something of such magnitude for the medium. We've got a lot of examples of properties prospering on the small screen too, with The Last of Us proving to be just as worthy of the HBO drama as we knew it would be.

And now, a new video game movie is seemingly in the works - but it's one we weren't immediately expecting.

It has been revealed that Bungie has hired a former Warner Bros. Discovery exec to lead the bold step for the Destiny franchise into movies and television.

Gabriel VanHuss is the new Head of Linear Media for the franchise at Bungie, and he'll be the man behind pushing the looter-shooter into brand-new mediums. It doesn't end at movies and TV, either, as he's expected to make some pushes into books and comics too.

It makes perfect sense, as after Bungie birthed the Halo series, it's clear to see that they can effectively manufacture swathes of extended canon for their franchises - and Destiny seems ripe for adaptation.

As Bungie is now owned by SonyDestiny could be the gaming goliath's next big IP to make the leap into live-action - either as a movie or TV series.

VanHuss - "Destiny has a universe worth of stories waiting to be told"

Revealing the news on his LinkedIn page, VanHuss has explained a little more about what his job will come to mean for the company, as well as his excitement for joining the team.

"I recently took the gig as Head of Linear Media for the Destiny franchise at Bungie," he says. "This new position will work with the Destiny Universe Leadership team to create strategy and execute the operations for expansion of Destiny into new media, including TV, films, books, comics, and audio formats."

"Destiny has a universe worth of stories waiting to be told, and I look forward to connecting best-in-class partners to our amazing creative team to bring them to life for current and new fans. Eyes up, guardian!"

It's exciting to see that Destiny is staring down the barrel of new possibilities, especially as the franchise seems perfect for a good thousand spin-off novels. There goes the rest of our reading lives.
