If you played the original Outcast game in 1999, then you’ll surely be excited for the release date and more gameplay details of the sequel, Outcast: A New Beginning.

In many ways, the original Outcast was doing the non-linear open-world gameplay strategy long before the likes of Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. While the series has laid dormant for over two decades, Appeal Studios is bringing it back with THQ Nordic for an all-out sequel, built for modern machines.

We don’t currently know the release date for Outcast: A New Beginning, but we have caught a glimpse at several key gameplay details. As such, we know a little bit about what you’ll be doing in this third-person, sci-fi action game.

Yes, Outcast: A New Beginning is a direct sequel to the original game that released in 1999. While this iteration of the series has seen a huge facelift compared to the original release, it’s still part of the same franchise, exists in the same world, and continues the same story.

However, the developer is super clear that players don’t need to have played the original Outcast game to play or understand A New Beginning. This is fantastic news, as it’s highly likely that most younger gamers these days will never have played the original title, or even heard of it.

This latest title from Appeal Studios is a third-person, non-linear open-world game that takes place on the alien world of Adelpha. You play as Cutter Slade, a former Navy SEAL whose job is to protect the alien Talan race from an invading force. It’s all very reminiscent of Avatar, without the big blue aliens.

Much of the gameplay is focused on traversal, which sees Slade equip a jetpack and glide suit for most of his movement needs. As such, Slade is capable of flying almost infinitely across the gorgeous landscapes of Adelpha, engaging in quests and taking out enemy bases along the way. In lots of ways, this reminds us slightly of Anthem.

A huge gameplay component is the weapon system, which lets players change up their playstyle on the fly. In a preview that showcased some gameplay from Outcast: A New Beginning, we saw Slade change his assault rifle into a makeshift sniper, all while in the middle of a firefight.

There’s an element of base building here, too. Players can collect resources and complete quests that will improve their home base, and let them rescue and recruit new animals and allies. In addition, Slade will also learn new languages as the game progresses, letting him communicate with more alien colonies as time goes by.
